A credit bureau does not approve the loan
NCR explains that a bureau supplies credit information while the credit provider decides whether to grant credit. A report is one part of the assessment; it does not replace an income and expense review.
NCR: credit bureau and consumer rights
- 01
Bureau record
Information about accounts and repayment history.
- 02
Provider assessment
The lender reviews the report and application.
- 03
Provider decision
Approval and the final quote depend on the provider.
What to inspect in your report
| Check | Look for |
|---|---|
| Personal details | Incorrect names, ID details or unfamiliar information. |
| Accounts | Accounts you do not recognise or duplicate entries. |
| Payments and balances | Amounts and payment status that do not match records. |
| Debt review information | A status you believe is inaccurate; obtain supporting evidence. |
NCR states that you may request one free credit record from a bureau in a twelve-month period and challenge information you believe is incorrect.
A practical dispute route in South Africa
- 01
Get the report
Identify the precise account and item you dispute.
- 02
Collect evidence
Keep statements, paid-up letters and other supporting records.
- 03
Submit to the bureau
Use its official dispute channel and keep the reference.
- 04
Track the investigation
Experian states that it has 20 business days to investigate after a dispute is logged.
Experian describes its dispute service as free. It asks for identity and address evidence and relevant supporting documents through its portal. Follow the bureau’s current instructions.
Avoid misleading promises
| Promise | More useful action |
|---|---|
| “Pay to clear all negative history” | Dispute inaccurate information through the bureau; valid history is a different issue. |
| “A score guarantees approval” | Review your full budget and the provider’s requirements. |
| “No checks means an easier loan” | Verify the provider and the claim before applying. |
